Gallery: LeConte Lodge Sees First Autumn Snowfall

While fall colors have yet to fully burst across most of the state, snow is already falling on Mount LeConte.

Owners of LeConte Lodge said on Facebook Monday that Sunday’s rain and mist transitioned from sleet “to our first autumn snow!” Temperatures fell to 26 degrees and snow fell throughout Sunday night for an inch of accumulation.

Snow continued to fall Monday with an accumulation of about three inches by noon and temperatures hovering in the 20s. When guests at the lodge woke up Tuesday, 4 inches of snow had fallen on the mountain.

”Going to be a beautiful but chilly Tuesday high above East Tennessee,” the lodge said on Facebook. “The thermometer should climb above freezing by this afternoon, so expect a fair amount of snow melt and sloppy trail conditions.”

Mount LeConte is the highest peak completely within Tennessee. And it’s the third-highest peak in Smoky Mountains National Park.

The LeConte Lodge ”is the only place where a visitor can sleep overnight on a mountaintop in a snug, permanent structure with hot and hearty meals on tap,” reads the lodge’s website.

The lodge can sleep 60 guests in seven rough-hewn cabins and in three multi-room lodges.

None of those cabins or rooms have electricity. No showers, either. That’s by design, “appropriate for a getaway from the high tech world a mile below.”

Visit the lodge’s website here for more amenities, rates, and reservations.
