Darkness. Open water. Ghosts.
There’s a phobia for each of these separately. But the folks at Canoe the Caney have mixed them together for a Halloween canoe or kayak tour like none other.
If you’ve driven I-40 between Nashville and Cookeville, you’ve likely crossed the Coney Fork River. Maybe you even counted the number of times you crossed it in a single trip. The river splits from the Cumberland River at Carthage and meanders south to Center Hill Lake.
Daytime trips with Canoe the Caney, located in Silver Fork on the lake’s eastern side, are fun with beautiful sites of bridges and waterfalls. Its Halloween-season tours offer trips into the macabre with tales of spirits, a flooded town, and an abandoned prison — all at night and all on the lake (not the river). Its website says there are no jump scares or traps, like a typical haunted house.

DAM Haunted Woods

Aren’t you glad those haunted house actors can’t touch you? Me, too.
But some like their scares a bit more personal. That is exactly what you’ll get at the DAM Haunted Woods events in Kingsport. You even have to sign a waiver to get in.
”This is a physical-contact haunted attraction,” reads the the Haunted Woods website. “By entering the attraction, you give our scare actors full authority to grab, touch, or push you. But rest assured that the actors are trained to interact with guests in a safe manner. You may also come into contact with props — some of which are replica items but most of which are real. Guests, however, are not permitted to touch actors back or the props.”
And if that isn’t real enough, the Woods’ quarter-mile trail also features tight spaces, water, foul smells, fog, and loud noises. Phew. Not for the faint-hearted.

Atwood’s 13th Realm haunted trail must be doing something right. Because for 13 years now, the trail has amassed a serious following and has continued to deliver the scares.
This haunted attraction has it all. Its midway is ”filled with wayward characters eager to strike a pose,” music, a bonfire, horror movies, and “epic” live shows.
Then, there’s the haunted trail. Organizers don’t divulge much information about what goes on in the wood, only that visitors will ”travel through a world where behind every shadow, lurks fear itself!!”
